Expert Rug Repair

As the prices of Oriental rugs continue to rise, older and more extensively damaged pieces will be repaired. Rugs that previously were not believed to merit the repair investment may be re-evaluated in view of the current rug prices.

Oriental rug repair is a unique art form, requiring craftsmanship, skill and understanding of rug construction. We utilize our knowledge of rug structure and our vast experience in the industry to provide outstanding Oriental rug repair services to our customers.

There are no effective high technology processes to repair an antique rug. They were made by hand and must be repaired by hand. Holes and tears can be mended by our expert staff of weavers who carefully match the original pattern, threads and color of your rug.

Repair Rug Holes & Tears

Holes through the foundation are time consuming to repair by reconstruction. The repair time required increases with the knot density and the size of the hole. The loss of pile knots and warps occurs quickly once there is a break in the warp strings. So, for a rug in use, the sooner the hole is repaired, the less costly the repair.

We must first construct a frame in which we will place the damaged area onto. This assures that the warp string (foundation) is under equal tension as the repairs proceed, preventing wrinkles or distortions in the foundation. Needle movement in a warp repair is usually slow and difficult because the needle is forced through existing knots.

For all repairs, we select the proper wool; 2 ply, 3 ply, 4 ply up to 6 ply woolen yarn is selected before hand dyeing. Colors are often included in a technical description of an oriental rug. Unfortunately color descriptions are neither precise nor uniform. The color of the same yarns appears lighter if the side of the yarn is viewed rather than the cut end of the yarn.

Hand dyeing is difficult to get predictable and consistent results without a great deal of experience. There are simply too many variables to control. Some of these variables include: type and quality of dye, quality of the wool, type of mordant, mineral content of water, temperature of dye bath and mordant, time in dye bath and mordant. We carefully match colors in natural sunlight instead of viewing under fluorescent or incandescent lights.

Fringe Repair and Edge Serging

One of the most common rug repairs involves the decorative fringe. Worn or missing fringes may be rewoven paying close attention to the rug's colors and structure. This is a very elaborate and meticulous process.

If you would like to completely change the fringe, we have a wide variety of colors and fabrics to choose from. Some customers prefer to remove the fringe altogether.

The sides of your Oriental rugs must be secured with wool or cotton thread to protect them and keep them from unraveling. This process of serging gives your rug a fine finished appearance. We offer both hand serging and machine serging, depending on rug construction.

Before we begin the serging process, we make sure your rug edges are solid enough. If your rug edges require repairs, we reinforce them prior to serging to add durability and make the repairs last.
